Can You Use Spray Wax On Windows?

Car spray on waxes have become much more popular over the years as the technology has improved. If your like me then you enjoy the convenience these products offer compared to traditional paste wax.

Spray on car waxes can be applied to windows following the same procedure as applying the wax to other areas. While it won’t damage the glass, smearing and streaking are much more noticeable. So its important to buff the wax with dry microfiber cloth after applying the wax.

There are a couple of minor but annoying issues when it comes to using water less spray wax on windows and windshields. Such as over-spray which can be tricky to avoid.

Tips For Using Spray Wax On Windows

How to wax your windows without problems. First always make sure your windows are washed and cleaned well before applying any wax. You don’t want to trap in any dirt or dust under the wax.

Always Wash Car First

I recommend a car wash and even possibly wiping the windows one more with a wet towel and then drying them. Just in case on your trip back from the wash you collected some dust.

Avoid Using Too Much Wax

One problem with using spray waxes on windows is its easy to use too much. Which becomes harder to buff off since its a smaller surface area. You don’t need very much wax on the windows.

Having too much wax could cause visual impairment. So its important to always buff out the wax with a dry microfiber towel.

In fact you might not need to spray the windows directly at all. If you wax the rest of the car first, there should be enough wax left over on your towel to give the windows a good coating.

Don’t Spray Windows Directly

Also it works better to spray the towel instead of any surface you intend to wax. This way you can catch all the wax that is sprayed out.

Besides getting too much wax on the window. As we mentioned its harder to control how much and where the spray wax ends up.

Avoid Getting Wax On Other Surfaces

When your waxing the windows you want to avoid getting the wax on parts of the car you already touched up, or possibly the weather stripping, wind deflectors or your mirrors.

While wax isn’t going to damage any plastic or rubber it can give it a shiny or even greasy appearance. Not a huge deal but at this point you are going to want to finish the job to make sure it appears even all around.

Avoid The Wind

Another tip is get out the wind when using a spray wax otherwise its going to get all over. If you can’t avoid the wind then try to point the spray directly into your towel.

Use the palm of your hand to grasp your towel like a baseball glove. Then just spray into the towel. Be careful not to spray too much though because you don’t need a lot of wax for windows.

Don’t Wax The Interior Glass

I would avoid trying to wax the interior window simply because you don’t want wax to get on your dash or side door panels. Instead use a specific glass cleaner or wet towel to remove film or streaks.

Spray Wax vs Glass Cleaners

Spray wax does a great job of giving your windows and car a shiny and glossy appearance. Your windows will look great if applied correctly, but spray waxes lack when it comes to functionality.

With actual glass cleaners you can get the benefit of anti-fogging and anti-hazing technologies. They work for both hot and cold weather situations and make driving safer.

There is also Rain-X glass cleaners and rain repellents. Rain-X is a great brand specializing in these rain repellent cleaners and treatments.

Rain-X works by causing the rain water to bead up. Making visibility better and the water runs off easier. Wax will help water bead up as well but it doesn’t last as long.

Glass cleaners and protectors are applied the same way you would a wax. Use two towels, one for the cleaner and the other for buffing. Rub in the cleaner then buff out the excess with a dry towel.

Best Car Spray Waxes

Most of the car spray waxes available are great products. So it comes down to which brand do you prefer? While I haven’t tried them all, I have used both the Shine Armor and CAR GUYS Hybrid wax.

Really both were great products as far as functionality. The Shine Armor actually gives the car a better shine (go figure). I used the Shine Armor with carnauba which is a yellow wax.

Their main and best seller is a purple wax which is highly rated. I happen to go with whatever brand was cheaper. There was a lightning deal for the Shine Armor at the time, so that is what I happened to order after running out of CAR GUYS wax.

Shine Armor is the brand I would recommend, but you can check out the best spray waxes on Amazon here.
