Are Exhaust Leaks Worth Fixing?

If you notice an exhaust leak, it may seem like a good idea to deal with it later. Apart from the smell in the cabin, there is unlikely to be an obviously big issue with the car. Given how expensive fixing problems with your car can be, is it worth it to fix an exhaust leak?

Exhaust leaks should be fixed in most cases. Some leaks are easy to fix and others may require an expert, but the potential for further damage is very high and so exhaust leaks should be taken seriously.

First of all, we’ll look at some different types of exhaust leaks and how much they cost to fix. We’ll also consider how to fix these yourself and why you should get exhaust leaks taken care of. Exhaust leaks can be the symptoms of larger issues and so should be taken notice of.

Is It Expensive To Fix An Exhaust Leak?

Fixing a vehicle is not normally a cheap exercise. This is particularly the case when it involves the services of an expert, who is going to charge for labor costs. The amount of damage to the part may require a replacement, and the location of the part may increase the cost too.

Labor changes with a lot of factors, including the area that you’re in and the estimated time it will take. Mechanics are not your only option, you may be able to find a specialty exhaust shop that can do the repairs cheaply and easily.

An exhaust shop may have specialized equipment to fabricate an exhaust system. Gasket replacements will also be straightforward to deal with.  In the case of leaks, it may even be possible to fabricate a new section of pipe that can usually be bent to match.

Universal mufflers or pipes can usually be made to match the original. Minor leaks can even be welded up without the need for replacing parts. This can be significantly cheaper than purchasing original or genuine parts, particularly if sourcing mufflers or tailpipes is difficult for a vehicle.

However, at a minimum, it will cost around $30 and can go up hundreds or even into the thousands. The reason for the differences in costs has to do with what remedial actions have to be taken as there are all kinds of leaks that need to be fixed in different ways.

Some issues can be fixed by applying a sealant and will be the cheapest. Once you need to replace the exhaust pipe or other damaged parts such as the engine, you’re going to be facing a much stiffer bill for both labor and part costs.

Diagnosing where the exhaust leaks are coming from will add to the labor costs. Exhaust leaks may be caused by several parts in the exhaust system. This includes the manifold gasket, exhaust flex pipe, flange gaskets, seals, and the muffler.

Are Exhaust Leaks Easy To Fix?

Exhaust leaks can have so many causes which require either simple solutions or hours of work to remedy. While this is certainly an area that someone can DIY, replacements of entire exhaust systems are probably best left to the experts.

For leaks that you may be able to fix, you’ll want to check for signs of holes, rusting, or damage. Under the hood, trace the pipes that go from your engine to the underside of your car. Look carefully at the seals and components to see if you can identify damage.

The system consists of the catalytic converter, the exhaust manifold, the muffler, the tailpipe, and the resonator. Any leak or scratch along the way could allow gasses to escape in other areas. This means harmful gasses are being released closer to you and your lungs.

Small holes can be fixed temporarily with exhaust tape. This should not be a permanent fix and you should organize a proper solution immediately.

Fixing damage can be done in a few easy steps. First sand thoroughly, then prepare the surrounding area of the damage with a rag dipped in acetone. Finally, wrap exhaust tape around the damaged area.

Replacement of parts may be the only option when there is significant damage. This means first removing the old part. The part itself may have a model number or similar information that you can use to find a replacement. If you cannot find the exact part it is important to ensure that any replacement is in fact compatible with your vehicle.

Do Exhaust Leaks Matter?

A leaking tailpipe isn’t necessarily a sign that there is a serious issue. It won’t usually cause any noticeable noise. It is crucial to make sure that your exhaust pipe is working properly. Leaks mean gasses such as carbon monoxide are being released.

However, if the exhaust system is not functioning properly, gases from the engine gather underneath the vehicle. These gasses can leak into the cabin and cause issues for your health as well as being a bad smell.

However, in some situations leaking tailpipes can be the result of serious damage to or failure of some components. Repair costs go up quickly with more complicated cases and so it’s always a good idea to keep a watch out for signs of an exhaust leak.

Catching it early is important to prevent further damage to the car. Other components like your engine, transmission and other parts could be severely damaged if you don’t fix the problem quickly.

Exhaust leaks will also mess with engine management systems.  Sensors detect the composition of the exhaust to regulate fuel use, and an exhaust leak can result in inaccurate readings, causing further degradation. If you notice a check engine light on this should definitely be fixed quickly.
